A selection of activist groups committed to marginalized communities and against liberal/imperial violence. Their shields together form a defensewall in solidarity. The work is a direct response to increasing police repression and suppression of the right to demonstrate in the Netherlands. Consisting of a composition of ten woven shields, VIV appropriates the Indonesian rattan shields of the riot police. In doing so, the work reinstates and contextualizes these shields within the actual violent power dynamics of this society. With a rise in the number of demonstrations, increasing police violence, and a decrease in violence from citizens against the police, this is the reality. So, who actually needs a shield?
