Startblok (short. 4 min)
A sensory memory of a faded connection to the place I come from. A confusing sense of longing for a time I both cherish and wish to forget. A time in which I reflect on returning to my former self and the generations that came before me. Yet at the same time, I realize just how different I used to be — and that I never want to be that way again.
Reflecting on class (migration), liberalism, white normativity, gentrification, and, with that, decolonial thought.
Startblok is a research process for a longer film project and can be seen as a chapter in which several of that film’s themes converge.
Startblok got selected for the third edition of the biennial presentation Refresh Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Museum is dedicated to the future. With the solo exhibition The Collateral Kin by visual artist Raquel van Haver, a presentation of new artworks by 15 contemporary artists, a selection of 20 creative wishes for the future from all over the Netherlands, as well as results from collaborations with the IMC Weekendschool and Mediacollege Amsterdam, we offer a multifaceted insight into various perspectives on the future.
Aditional Super 8 Camera - Sam Broekman
Dolly Driver - Robin Stark
