Gettin’ Religion, 1948 - Archibald John Motley, Jr inspiration for use of color
JULY 2024
This website is an attempt to translate my practice through the language of color. I am from Amsterdam, in the Netherlands—one of the Western countries with some of the deepest capitalist roots, entwined in imperialism and colonialism to this day. In my work, I strive to research, confront, and relate to these systems of privilege, seeking to offer alternatives, expose what is wrong, and shift the narrative. Despite my deep repulsion towards this privileged position, the truth is that it feels far too vast, too entrenched, to fully escape.
Take Instagram, for example. It is a platform a lot of artists use to promote and archive their work. I understand why; young artists are dependent on it to some extent, already investing most of their time to sustain their practices. Yet, the platform is also proven to harm mental health, promote division by amplifying extremes, censor decolonial narratives, and trample on privacy rights—posing threats that are life-threatening for some.
When I began distancing myself from Meta, I turned to WIX to build a website. It was simple and easy, but I soon learned that the company’s investors support the Israeli genocide on Palestine. So I quit WIX and ended up selfhosting. As I had zero experience I ended up relying on ChatGPT for help and Google to be found… But no matter how much we try to escape platforms that sustain exploitative businesses and oppressive states, we always seem to end up with alternatives that exist within the same geopolitical climate.
Inspired by the work of David Hammons, this website offers visitors a chance to disrupt the dominant narrative by replacing the typical Western colors with green. As users interact with this feature, the page shifts to red, black, and green. But the moment they leave, the colors revert to red, white, and blue, reminding us of the enduring power of these dominant forces.
